What is the name of the first story in the collection 'The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes'?

The story behind the answer

The first story in the collection The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is “A Scandal in Bohemia.”

Arthur Conan Doyle first published the story in The Strand Magazine in July 1891. It introduced readers to Irene Adler, an opera singer whose intelligence and quick thinking allow her to outwit Holmes. The story opens with the King of Bohemia hiring Holmes to recover a compromising photograph.

The tale was the first of twelve Holmes stories serialised in The Strand between July 1891 and June 1892. George Newnes then collected them in book form on 14 October 1892, preserving their magazine publication order. That order is not necessarily the stories’ fictional chronology.

A common mix-up is confusing the collection’s first story with Holmes’s first appearance overall. That was A Study in Scarlet, published in 1887. Another misconception comes from modern adaptations, which often portray Irene Adler as Holmes’s romantic interest; Doyle’s original story mainly presents her as an exceptionally capable adversary whom Holmes admires as “the woman.”
