What is the name of the first Pokémon movie released internationally?

The first Pokémon movie released internationally was Pokémon: The First Movie.

Its full English title is Pokémon: The First Movie—Mewtwo Strikes Back. The film was released in Japan in 1998 and reached international markets beginning in 1999. Its main story follows Mewtwo, a genetically engineered Pokémon who questions the purpose of its creation and challenges the value of human and Pokémon relationships.

The movie expanded ideas introduced in the original games, including the connection between Mew and Mewtwo. It also included a shorter opening segment in some releases, featuring the clone scientist Dr. Fuji and the creation of Mewtwo.

The film became a major theatrical event for the franchise. Its release showed that Pokémon could move successfully from Game Boy games and television into cinema. The title is often shortened to Pokémon: The First Movie, while “Mewtwo Strikes Back” distinguishes it from later Pokémon films.
