What is the name of the first Pokémon feature film?

The story behind the answer

The first Pokémon feature film was titled Pokémon: The First Movie.

The Japanese film, known as Mewtwo Strikes Back, premiered in Japan on July 18, 1998. It was directed by Kunihiko Yuyama and centers on Mewtwo, a genetically engineered Pokémon created from research involving Mew. Mewtwo challenges the assumptions of its creators and seeks to prove its superiority.

The English-language release used the subtitle “Mewtwo Strikes Back” and arrived in North America on November 10, 1999. It was accompanied in theaters by the short film Pikachu’s Vacation, which focuses on Pikachu and several other Pokémon rather than the main human characters.

The film became a major commercial success, especially in North America, where it opened at number one. Its title is sometimes confused with Pokémon 2000, the second film, or with Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution, a 2019 computer-animated remake. The original film remains the starting point of the Pokémon theatrical movie series.
