The first female White House Press Secretary on The West Wing is C.J. Cregg, played by Allison Janney. She serves in President Josiah Bartlet’s administration from the series premiere through the sixth season.
C.J., whose full name is Claudia Jean Cregg, begins as a confident but sometimes unconventional spokesperson in the White House press briefing room. Her job is to defend Bartlet’s policies, manage reporters, and translate complicated political decisions into language the public can understand. Her relationship with journalist Danny Concannon adds another layer of tension to the role.
C.J. remains press secretary until “Liftoff,” when she becomes White House Chief of Staff after Leo McGarry leaves the position. She continues in that senior role through the final season, making her one of the administration’s longest-serving central figures.
Viewers sometimes confuse C.J. with Mandy Hampton, Kate Harper, or Ainsley Hayes, all prominent women in the series. None of them held the press secretary position. C.J. was also partly inspired by real-life press secretary Dee Dee Myers, who later served as a consultant on the show.
