What is the name of the final published novel in C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia?

The story behind the answer

The Last Battle is the final published novel in C.S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia.

Published in 1956, The Last Battle concludes the seven-book series with a conflict that threatens Narnia’s identity and future. The story includes the false Aslan, the ape Shift, the donkey Puzzle, and the final destruction of the old Narnian world. It won the Carnegie Medal in 1957, recognizing it as the outstanding children’s book of the preceding year.

The series has two common reading orders. The books were published from 1950 through 1956, beginning with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Some later editions number them in internal chronological order, placing The Magician’s Nephew first. Neither ordering changes The Last Battle’s status as the final published volume.

A frequent mix-up is confusing final publication with the first chronological story. The Magician’s Nephew takes place earliest in Narnian history, but The Last Battle was the last book Lewis published in the series.
