What is the name of the fictional village where J.K. Rowling set Harry Potter’s family home at number four?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling set Harry Potter’s family home at number four, Privet Drive, in Little Whinging.

Little Whinging is the fictional Surrey town where Harry lives with the Dursley family at the beginning of the series. The address is 4 Privet Drive, and the house becomes a recurring location, especially in the early novels and films.

Little Whinging is not the same place as Godric’s Hollow, where Harry’s parents lived and died, or Hogsmeade, the wizarding village near Hogwarts. Those locations serve very different roles in the story. The Dursleys’ neighborhood is deliberately presented as ordinary and suburban, contrasting with the hidden magical world.

The name “Little Whinging” is a wordplay reference to complaining or whining. Although the village is fictional, the exterior house used for the film adaptations was built as a set for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and later recreated at the Warner Bros. studio tour.
