What is the name of the fictional region explored in the original Pokémon games?

The story behind the answer

The original Pokémon games take place in the fictional region of Kanto.

Kanto is the setting of Pokémon Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow, as well as the first season of the animated series. It contains locations such as Pallet Town, Viridian City, Saffron City, and Cinnabar Island. The region also includes the eight traditional Gym challenges that lead toward the Pokémon League.

Kanto’s name is shared with a real region of Japan, but the Pokémon setting is not a direct map of modern geography. Its layout was inspired partly by Japan’s Kantō region. Later games introduced Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, and other regions, while several later titles allowed players to revisit Kanto.
