What is the name of the fictional language spoken by the Orcs in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Ring inscription?

The story behind the answer

The Ring inscription in J.R.R. Tolkien’s works is written in the Black Speech of Mordor.

Sauron created the Black Speech for the servants of Mordor, and the inscription on the One Ring is its best-known surviving example. The opening words are “Ash nazg durbatulûk,” translated as “One Ring to rule them all.”

The inscription appears in tengwar, a writing system associated especially with Elvish languages. This creates a common source of confusion: the script used to write the words is not the same thing as the language of the words.

Quenya and Sindarin are Elvish languages, while Adûnaic is associated with Númenor. The Ring’s language is instead the Black Speech, created to express Sauron’s authority over the Rings of Power.
