The fictional land where the hobbits live in J.R.R. Tolkien’s works is the Shire. It is a settled region in the northwest of Middle-earth and the home of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins.
The Shire is divided into areas including the Four Farthings, and important places there include Hobbiton, Bywater, and Tuckborough. Tolkien presents it as a largely rural society of farms, gardens, villages, inns, and family homes. Its ordinary routines contrast with the wars and kingdoms beyond its borders.
The Shire is not the whole of Middle-earth and is not the same as Gondor or Rohan, which are human realms farther south and east. In The Lord of the Rings, the hobbits’ journey begins in the Shire, and the book’s ending returns them there after the destruction of the Ring and the defeat of Sauron.
