What is the name of the fictional land where Bilbo and Frodo Baggins live in J.R.R. Tolkien’s works?

The story behind the answer

The fictional land where Bilbo and Frodo Baggins live in J.R.R. Tolkien’s works is the Shire.

The Shire is a rural region in northwestern Middle-earth, inhabited mainly by Hobbits. It is presented as a settled countryside of farms, villages, gardens, inns, and family homes, including Bag End, the Baggins residence at Hobbiton.

Bilbo begins his adventure from the Shire in The Hobbit, while Frodo leaves it carrying the One Ring in The Lord of the Rings. The contrast between the Shire’s domestic peace and the dangers beyond its borders is central to both stories.

The Shire is not the same place as Bree. Bree is a separate settlement east of the Shire, where Hobbits and Men live together. Frodo’s party passes through Bree after leaving home and meets Aragorn at the inn called the Prancing Pony.
