What is the name of the fictional forest where Treebeard lives in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth?

The story behind the answer

Fangorn Forest is the fictional forest where Treebeard lives in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth.

Fangorn Forest lies at the southern end of the Misty Mountains, near Isengard and Rohan. In The Two Towers, Merry and Pippin enter the forest after escaping from the Orcs who captured the Fellowship’s travelling companions. There they meet Treebeard, an Ent who becomes central to the resistance against Saruman.

The forest is ancient, mysterious, and inhabited by Ents and Huorns. Its trees are not merely scenery: Tolkien presents the woodland as a living community with its own memory, language, and moral perspective. The Ents’ march on Isengard becomes one of the book’s major turning points.

Fangorn is sometimes confused with Mirkwood, another important Tolkien forest. Mirkwood lies farther east and appears most prominently in The Hobbit. Fangorn, by contrast, is closely tied to the Ents, Treebeard, and the downfall of Saruman’s industrial stronghold.
