What is the name of the FBI headquarters building in The X-Files?

The story behind the answer

The FBI headquarters building is the J. Edgar Hoover Building. In The X-Files, FBI offices and officials are frequently shown in or associated with this Washington, D.C., headquarters.

The real building stands at 935 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, near the Department of Justice and the National Mall. It serves as the headquarters of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and is named for J. Edgar Hoover, the FBI director who led the bureau for nearly five decades. Congress formally named the building in 1972, shortly after Hoover’s death.

Construction began in 1965, and the building was inaugurated on September 30, 1975. Its Brutalist design includes separate elevations of eight and eleven stories, as well as secure internal corridors and underground facilities. The building’s imposing appearance helped make it a natural visual shorthand for federal authority in television and film.

“Langley” is a common mix-up because the CIA headquarters is located in Langley, Virginia. Quantico is the FBI training academy and research center in Virginia, while the Pentagon is the headquarters of the U.S. Department of Defense.
