What is the name of the FBI assistant director who often supports Mulder and Scully? The answer is Walter Skinner.

Walter Skinner is the FBI assistant director who supervises Mulder and Scully and oversees the X-Files. Mitch Pileggi played the character, who initially appeared stern, bureaucratic, and difficult to read. Over time, Skinner became one of the agents' most important protectors and allies within the FBI.

Skinner's support is rarely simple. He often has to balance loyalty to his agents against pressure from senior officials, conspirators, and political forces inside the Bureau. Although he sometimes reprimands Mulder and Scully or restricts their investigations, he repeatedly risks his career and personal safety to help them pursue the truth.

The other choices are FBI figures but do not fit this role. Alvin Kersh becomes a major authority figure later, while Jeffrey Spender and Brad Follmer have different positions and story arcs. Skinner remains closely associated with the X-Files across the original series and its later revival seasons.
