Answer
SS Edmund Fitzgerald
The SS Edmund Fitzgerald is the famous 1975 shipwreck in Lake Superior.
The American bulk carrier sank on 10 November 1975 during a severe storm while carrying taconite iron-ore pellets from Superior, Wisconsin, toward Detroit. All 29 crew members died. The wreck was discovered in two large sections on the lake floor in 1976, about 530 feet below the surface.
The Edmund Fitzgerald was 729 feet long and had entered service in 1958. At the time of her loss, she was the largest ship on the Great Lakes. The exact sequence that caused the sinking remains debated, although investigators considered heavy seas, flooding, structural stress, and hatch-cover problems.
Canadian singer Gordon Lightfoot’s 1976 song “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” made the disaster widely known. The wreck lies within Canadian waters and is protected under Ontario heritage legislation.
