The Gansu Wind Farm is the enormous Chinese wind-power complex often described as the world's largest wind farm.
Also called the Jiuquan Wind Power Base, the project is being developed in Gansu Province in northwestern China. Its turbines are spread across several wind parks near Jiuquan, where strong and consistent winds make large-scale generation possible. The complex was planned to reach 20 gigawatts of capacity, although construction and grid connection have proceeded in stages.
The project illustrates the difference between a wind farm and a wind-power base. A single wind farm is usually one coordinated site, while Gansu is a group of large projects managed as part of a broader regional development. Much of the electricity must travel long distances to population centers in eastern China, requiring major transmission infrastructure.
The title “largest” can vary depending on whether sources compare planned capacity, installed capacity, or electricity actually delivered. Gansu is nevertheless the standard historical answer for the world’s largest wind-farm complex.
