Quenya is the Elvish language associated with Valinor in J.R.R. Tolkien’s writings.
Tolkien based Quenya’s sound and structure largely on Finnish, while developing it as part of the linguistic history of the Elves. It is connected especially with the High Elves, including the Noldor, and with the blessed realm of Valinor. In Middle-earth, Quenya became a language of lore, ceremony, and formal names rather than the everyday speech of most Elves.
Sindarin is the other major Elvish language readers encounter in The Lord of the Rings. It became the more common spoken Elvish language in much of Middle-earth and was influenced by Welsh in Tolkien’s linguistic design.
The languages are not interchangeable. Adûnaic is associated with Númenor, while Khuzdul is the secret language of the Dwarves. Tolkien’s invented languages were supported by extensive vocabulary, grammar, and historical relationships.
