Rivendell is the Elven refuge where the Council of Elrond meets in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.
Rivendell is also called Imladris, a Sindarin name meaning “deep valley of the cleft.” Elrond establishes the refuge in the Second Age, and it remains an important Elven settlement during the events of the Third Age. The house provides shelter for travelers and preserves lore from earlier periods of Middle-earth.
Frodo reaches Rivendell after being wounded by a Nazgûl on Weathertop. There, Elrond heals him and hosts the council that debates the fate of the One Ring. The council ultimately forms the Fellowship and sends it south toward Mordor.
Lothlórien is another Elven realm, ruled by Galadriel and Celeborn. Mirkwood is a great woodland kingdom, while Minas Tirith is the principal city of Gondor. None of those places is the council’s meeting site.
