Arwen is the elf who becomes Aragorn’s wife in J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium.
Arwen is the daughter of Elrond and Celebrían and is known as Arwen Undómiel, meaning “Evenstar.” She belongs to the Eldar and lives in Rivendell for much of The Lord of the Rings. Her romance with Aragorn is connected to the older story of Beren and Lúthien, another relationship between a mortal man and an immortal elf.
Arwen chooses a mortal life so that she can marry Aragorn. Their marriage takes place after the War of the Ring, when Aragorn becomes King Elessar. This choice means that she shares the fate of mortals rather than sailing west with the Elves.
Readers sometimes confuse Arwen with Éowyn because both characters are connected to Aragorn and the events of the War of the Ring. Éowyn is a human noblewoman of Rohan, while Arwen is Elrond’s daughter and Aragorn’s eventual queen.
