What is the name of the dragon who attacks Dale and the Lonely Mountain in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit?

The story behind the answer

Smaug is the dragon who attacks Dale and the Lonely Mountain in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit.

Smaug drives the Dwarves from Erebor and takes their treasure as his hoard. He remains there for generations until Bilbo Baggins enters the mountain and speaks with him. Bilbo notices a vulnerable bare patch in Smaug’s armor-like underside and later provides information that helps Bard the Bowman defeat the dragon.

Smaug belongs to Tolkien’s Third Age stories, while Ancalagon and Glaurung belong to earlier periods of the legendarium. Scatha is another dragon mentioned in Tolkien’s history, but he is associated with the Grey Mountains. The dragon’s death causes the Battle of the Five Armies, a major conflict involving Dwarves, Elves, Men, Orcs, and Eagles.
