What is the name of the deepest point in the Philippine Trench?

The deepest point in the Philippine Trench is called Emden Deep. It lies in the Philippine Sea, east of the Philippines, within one of the deepest submarine trenches in the world.

The German survey ship Emden discovered the deep in 1927. It was later explored in detail by the Danish Galathea expedition in 1951, which collected biological samples from depths exceeding 6,000 meters. Those findings showed that fish, amphipods, echinoderms, and bacteria could survive—and even thrive—under extreme pressure.

Emden Deep is also known as Galathea Deep or Galathea Depth, so those names can cause confusion in quizzes. However, Emden Deep is the standard name for the deepest feature of the Philippine Trench. Its recorded depth is about 10,540 meters, making it the third-deepest known point in the global ocean.

In March 2021, Victor Vescovo and Filipino oceanographer Deo Florence Onda made the first crewed descent to Emden Deep. Their expedition also reported significant trash on the seafloor.
