The cobalt-blue Mexico City house that was Frida Kahlo’s home is La Casa Azul, or the Blue House.
La Casa Azul stands in the Colonia del Carmen neighborhood of Coyoacán. Frida Kahlo was born there in 1907 and spent much of her childhood in the family home. After her marriage to muralist Diego Rivera, the house remained closely connected to both artists. Its vivid blue walls and central courtyard give it the distinctive appearance reflected in its Spanish name.
Kahlo returned to the house during important periods of her life, including years of illness and recovery after the 1925 bus accident that profoundly affected her health and art. The home also became a meeting place for artists and political figures. Leon Trotsky and his wife lived there temporarily after arriving in Mexico in 1937, with additional security measures added because of the political threats against him.
Rivera donated the house and its contents after Kahlo’s death, and it opened as the Frida Kahlo Museum in 1958. The museum preserves rooms, personal belongings, folk art, photographs, and works associated with Kahlo and Rivera. Palacio de Bellas Artes is linked to Kahlo’s funeral, but it is not her home.
