The cleaner shrimp in the Finding Nemo aquarium is named Jacques.
Jacques is one of the Tank Gang members living in the dentist’s office aquarium. His job and personality are built around cleaning: he is fussy, theatrical, and eager to keep the tank—and its inhabitants—in order. The character’s French name and accent make him especially easy to recognize.
Joe Ranft provided Jacques’s voice in Finding Nemo. Ranft, a major Pixar story artist and occasional voice performer, died in 2005; his brother Jerome Ranft voiced Jacques in Finding Dory. Disney describes the character as a white-banded cleaner shrimp, a real type of shrimp known for removing parasites and debris from fish. Jacques is sometimes misspelled “Jacque,” but “Jacques” is the standard character name.
