What is the name of the channel that links Lake Huron and Lake Michigan?
Answer
Straits of Mackinac
Answer
Straits of Mackinac
The Straits of Mackinac link Lake Huron and Lake Michigan.
This waterway lies between Michigan’s Upper and Lower peninsulas. It is about 8 kilometres wide at its narrowest point and has long been important to navigation, fisheries, and regional transportation.
The straits are hydrologically significant because Lakes Michigan and Huron have nearly the same water level and are connected by a deep, broad passage. For some scientific and geographic purposes, the two are treated as one lake, Lake Michigan–Huron, although they retain separate names and basins in common usage.
The Mackinac Bridge crosses the straits and connects Michigan’s two peninsulas. Mackinac Island, a well-known tourist destination, lies nearby but is not located in the channel itself.
