The ceremonial apron worn by sumo wrestlers during ring-entering ceremonies is called a keshō-mawashi.
A keshō-mawashi is an elaborately decorated apron worn over the wrestler’s competition mawashi. Designs can include embroidered animals, landscapes, symbols, sponsor references, or personal motifs. The garment is displayed during the dohyō-iri before top-division bouts.
It is different from the plain or lightly decorated mawashi used during competition. The fighting mawashi is tightly wrapped and serves as the garment wrestlers grip during a bout. The keshō-mawashi is primarily ceremonial and is not worn during the actual contest.
Top-division wrestlers enter together in a formal procession, while yokozuna perform a separate ring-entering ceremony. Their keshō-mawashi therefore forms part of one of sumo’s most visually recognizable traditions.
