What is the name of the center court stadium at the Australian Open?
Answer
Rod Laver Arena
Answer
Rod Laver Arena
The center court stadium at the Australian Open is Rod Laver Arena.
Rod Laver Arena is the main stadium at Melbourne Park, the Australian Open's home since 1988. It is the tournament's principal show court and hosts many of the biggest singles matches, including the men's and women's finals. The arena has a retractable roof, allowing play to continue during rain or extreme heat.
The venue opened in 1988 as the National Tennis Centre at Flinders Park. It was renamed Centre Court in 1996 and then became Rod Laver Arena on January 16, 2000. The name honors Rod Laver, the Australian great who won the Australian Open three times and remains the only man to complete two calendar-year Grand Slams.
Centre Court is therefore a common historical mix-up, but it is a former name rather than the arena's current official name. Margaret Court Arena and John Cain Arena are also major Melbourne Park courts, but neither is the Australian Open's center court.
