What is the name of the capital city of Rohan in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth?

The story behind the answer

Edoras is the capital city of Rohan in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth.

Edoras stands on a hill in the valley of Harrowdale, beneath the White Mountains. It is the seat of the Kings of Rohan and the location of Meduseld, the golden hall where King Théoden holds court. The city’s name comes from Old English and means “enclosures” or “homesteads.”

In The Lord of the Rings, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, and Gandalf travel to Edoras during the crisis caused by Saruman and Gríma Wormtongue. Gandalf helps Théoden recover his judgment, after which the Rohirrim prepare for war.

Edoras is often confused with Minas Tirith, the capital of Gondor. Minas Tirith is a much larger fortified city, while Edoras is the royal settlement of the horse-lords. In the film adaptations, the exterior set for Edoras was built at Mount Sunday in New Zealand.
