Hogwarts is the boarding school for young witches and wizards in J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series.
The school’s full name is Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It is located in Scotland and is divided into four houses: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Students typically begin at age eleven and study there for seven years.
Hogwarts is central to the series because most of Harry Potter’s education, friendships, rivalries, and major confrontations occur there. The school is governed by a headmaster or headmistress and includes subjects such as Transfiguration, Potions, Charms, and Defense Against the Dark Arts.
Beauxbatons and Durmstrang are also wizarding schools in the wider world of the series, but they are not Harry’s school. Ilvermorny appears in the expanded fictional setting and is located in North America.
