The Bennet family estate in Pride and Prejudice is Longbourn.
Longbourn is the Bennets’ home near the fictional town of Meryton in Hertfordshire. Mr and Mrs Bennet live there with their five daughters: Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, Catherine, and Lydia. The estate provides the family with status and income, but its legal arrangement also creates anxiety about the daughters’ futures.
The property is subject to an entail, a form of inheritance restriction designed to keep an estate intact and pass it through the male line. Because Mr Bennet has no son, Longbourn is expected to pass to his distant male cousin, Mr Collins. This is why Mrs Bennet is so urgently focused on marrying her daughters advantageously.
Longbourn is often confused with other estates in the novel. Netherfield Park is rented by Mr Bingley, Pemberley belongs to Mr Darcy, and Rosings Park belongs to Lady Catherine de Bourgh. These estates mark differences in wealth and social position, but only Longbourn is the Bennet family home and estate.
