Producer George Martin assembled fourteen tracks, combining original songs by John Lennon and Paul McCartney with covers of material the group had performed in clubs. Ten of the songs were recorded during a marathon session at EMI Studios on February 11, 1963. Four tracks had already appeared on the band's first two singles, including “Love Me Do” and “Please Please Me.” Martin had considered recording the group live at Liverpool's Cavern Club, but its acoustics were judged unsuitable.

Listeners sometimes confuse the album with With the Beatles, which was the band's second UK studio album and arrived later in 1963. The American market also creates confusion because the songs appeared in altered configurations, including Introducing... The Beatles and The Early Beatles. The original UK album became the standard international edition when the catalog was issued on CD in 1987.
