What is the name of the Baggins family home in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit?

The story behind the answer

Bag End is the name of the Baggins family home in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit.

Bag End is a comfortable hobbit-hole at the end of a lane in Hobbiton, in the Shire. Bilbo Baggins lives there when Gandalf and the Dwarves arrive to recruit him for the journey to the Lonely Mountain. The home’s underground rooms, round doors, pantry, and domestic comforts establish the ordinary life Bilbo is about to leave behind.

The name is a joke based on the idea of a dead-end location: the house stands at the end of Bagshot Row. Tolkien also used the name in a personal way, since “Bag End” was the name of his home in Worcestershire. That house was named after a farm in the area.

Bag End later belongs to Frodo Baggins and becomes a setting for important events in The Lord of the Rings. Samwise Gamgee eventually lives there with his family after Frodo leaves Middle-earth.
