Dinner for One is the television broadcast traditionally shown in Germany on New Year's Eve.
The sketch features an elderly woman, Miss Sophie, celebrating her birthday with a formal dinner. Her four absent guests are represented by her butler, James, who drinks each guest's toast and becomes increasingly unsteady as the meal continues. The recurring line “The same procedure as every year” is closely associated with the performance.
Although the sketch is in English, it became a major German New Year's television tradition after broadcasts by German public television. It is also widely shown in several other northern European countries. The recording most often broadcast was made for German television in 1963 and stars Freddie Frinton and May Warden.
The title can be mistaken for a German-language production, but the dialogue is English. Its unusual status is precisely that an English-language British sketch became an annual festive institution for German-speaking audiences.
