Taipei’s famous New Year’s Eve fireworks display in Taiwan is hosted by Taipei 101.
Taipei 101 is a supertall skyscraper in Taipei’s Xinyi District. Its New Year celebration combines fireworks with animated lighting effects across the building’s exterior, turning the tower into a giant illuminated countdown landmark. The display is broadcast widely and attracts spectators throughout the city.
The tower was officially opened in 2004 and was the world’s tallest building from 2004 until the completion of Dubai’s Burj Khalifa in 2010. Its distinctive design was inspired partly by a bamboo stalk, and the building has 101 above-ground floors, reflected in its name.
The fireworks are not the same thing as a separate citywide countdown concert, and Taipei 101 should not be confused with Taipei’s nearby Taipei World Trade Center. The skyscraper remains the central structure associated with the city’s midnight spectacle.
