The annual McDonald’s game-promotion using collectible game pieces is Monopoly.
McDonald’s Monopoly first ran in the United States in 1987 and was modeled on Hasbro’s Monopoly board game. Customers collected property tokens printed on packaging for selected menu items, such as fries or a Big Mac. Completing a color group could qualify a player for a major prize, while other pieces offered instant food prizes.
The promotion has appeared in many countries, sometimes under altered names and with different prizes. In the United States, the rarest pieces historically included Boardwalk and Park Place, whose combination was associated with a top cash prize. The game is a sales promotion, not the same contest as the retail Monopoly board game.
A common mix-up is treating “Monopoly” as the name of a prize rather than the promotion itself. The McDonald’s version uses Monopoly properties and imagery, but its rules, prizes, dates, and availability are determined separately by McDonald’s and its contest administrators.
