The device used to relive genetic memories in Assassin's Creed is called the Animus.
The Animus allows a user to experience memories inherited through a fictional genetic memory system. In the original game and several sequels, Desmond Miles uses it to access the experiences of ancestors such as Altaïr and Ezio.
The machine is central to the series' structure because it connects modern-day characters with historical adventures. Abstergo Industries originally presents the Animus as a research and commercial tool, while the Templars use it to investigate the past and locate powerful artifacts.
The Animus should not be confused with Eagle Vision, which is an Assassin ability, or the Bleeding Effect, a consequence of prolonged exposure that can make users display skills and memories from ancestors. Later entries introduce portable and redesigned versions, but the device remains the franchise's key bridge between eras.
