The amusement park in Vienna containing the famous giant Ferris wheel is the Prater.
More precisely, the rides area is called the Wurstelprater, but it is commonly known simply as the Prater. It lies within the much larger Prater public park in Vienna’s Leopoldstadt district. The park’s landmark attraction is the Wiener Riesenrad, or Vienna Giant Ferris Wheel, which stands about 64.75 metres tall.
The Riesenrad opened in 1897 to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Emperor Franz Joseph I. It originally had 30 passenger cars, but only 15 were restored after the wheel was badly damaged by fire during World War II. It later became a symbol of Vienna and appeared in films including The Third Man and Before Sunrise.
A frequent mix-up is treating “Prater” as only the amusement park. Technically, Prater refers to the broad public park, while Wurstelprater identifies the historic amusement area inside it.
