Avatar is the 2009 film directed by James Cameron that features the moon Pandora.
Avatar is a science-fiction film set largely on Pandora, a fictional moon orbiting the gas giant Polyphemus in the Alpha Centauri star system. The story follows former Marine Jake Sully, who operates a remotely controlled Na’vi-human hybrid body and becomes involved with the Na’vi people and the moon’s ecosystem.
The production became notable for its extensive use of computer-generated imagery, performance capture, and stereoscopic 3D presentation. It was released in December 2009 and became a major worldwide box-office success. Cameron wrote and directed the film, which also stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Sigourney Weaver.
Avatar’s Pandora is a fictional setting and is separate from the mythological Pandora, Saturn’s moon, and asteroid 55 Pandora. The shared name is an intentional reference to the idea of a world containing both danger and discovery.
