William Shakespeare’s The Tempest inspired the 1956 science-fiction film Forbidden Planet.
Forbidden Planet relocates the basic structure of Shakespeare’s play to the planet Altair IV. Prospero becomes Dr. Morbius, Miranda becomes his daughter Altaira, Ariel is echoed by the invisible technological force known as Robby the Robot, and the island setting becomes an isolated alien world. The film’s dangerous legacy of advanced knowledge also contributes to its association with Pandora-like stories.
The movie is not an official adaptation of the Greek Pandora myth. Its central literary source is The Tempest, while its ideas about forbidden knowledge, unleashed power, and consequences create a thematic connection to Pandora’s box.
Directed by Fred M. Wilcox, the film is notable for its electronic score, pioneering visual effects, and Robby the Robot. It helped establish the visual and conceptual vocabulary of later science fiction, even though its plot is rooted in Shakespearean rather than Greek mythology.
