What is the name of Sweden’s national day, celebrated annually on 6 June?

The story behind the answer

Swedish National Day is celebrated annually on 6 June in Sweden.

The date connects two major events in Swedish history. On 6 June 1523, Gustav Vasa was elected king, an event associated with the end of the Kalmar Union and the emergence of modern Sweden as an independent kingdom. On the same date in 1809, Sweden adopted a new constitution.

The day was first observed as Swedish Flag Day. It became a public holiday in 2005, giving it the official status of National Day. Public ceremonies often feature the Swedish flag, traditional costumes, music, and citizenship celebrations.

Swedish National Day should not be confused with Midsummer, which is one of Sweden’s most prominent cultural celebrations but falls on a Friday between 19 and 25 June. 6 June is also associated with Gustav Vasa’s accession and the country’s constitutional history.
