What is the name of Sweden’s currency?

The story behind the answer

Sweden’s currency is the Swedish krona.

The word krona means “crown,” and the currency’s plural form is kronor. Sweden introduced the krona in 1873, replacing the riksdaler as part of the Scandinavian Monetary Union with Denmark and Norway. Although the union later ended, all three countries retained crown-based currency names.

The Swedish krona is issued by Sveriges Riksbank, Sweden’s central bank. Its ISO currency code is SEK, and the symbol is commonly written as kr. The krona is divided into 100 öre for accounting purposes, although Sweden no longer uses öre coins in everyday cash transactions.

A common mix-up is confusing the Swedish krona with the Norwegian krone or Danish krone. Sweden is a member of the European Union but has retained the krona rather than adopting the euro. Swedish banknotes feature notable cultural figures, including Astrid Lindgren and Greta Garbo.
