Starbucks’ seasonal pumpkin-flavored latte is called the Pumpkin Spice Latte.

The drink combines espresso and steamed milk with pumpkin-pie spices, traditionally including cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove. It is commonly topped with whipped cream and additional spice. Despite its name, the flavor profile historically emphasized pumpkin-pie seasoning more than the taste of fresh pumpkin itself.

Starbucks developed the drink in 2003 after testing several seasonal beverage ideas. Early trials took place at selected stores in Vancouver and Washington, D.C., where the drink performed strongly. It expanded to Starbucks locations across the United States in 2004 and became an annual autumn release.

The Pumpkin Spice Latte is often shortened to PSL, an abbreviation Starbucks trademarked in 2015. In 2015, the recipe was also changed to include real pumpkin purée and remove artificial coloring. Other pumpkin beverages may appear on Starbucks’ fall menu, but they are not the same drink.
