Spotify introduced DJ in February 2023 as a personalized listening experience that combines music selection with spoken introductions. The feature uses artificial intelligence to choose tracks based on a listener's habits, preferences, and listening history, then presents them in a radio-style sequence.
The commentary is generated using Spotify's AI technology and an AI voice modeled on Xavier “X” Jernigan, Spotify's Head of Cultural Partnerships and the former host of the company's The Get Up show. That is why some descriptions call it “AI DJ,” but the official feature name is simply DJ.
DJ is commonly confused with playlist tools such as Discover Weekly or AI Playlist. Those tools recommend or generate collections of songs, while DJ adds an ongoing, presenter-like layer of commentary and transitions between personalized selections. Availability and supported markets have varied over time, and the feature has primarily been associated with Premium users.
