What is the name of Shakespeare's wife?
Answer
Anne Hathaway
Answer
Anne Hathaway
Shakespeare's wife was Anne Hathaway. They married in 1582 in the Stratford-upon-Avon area, when Shakespeare was 18 and Hathaway was 26. Their first child, Susanna, was born about six months later; they later had twins, Hamnet and Judith.
Hathaway came from Shottery, a village near Stratford, and was the daughter of farmer Richard Hathaway. Her family’s farmhouse, now known as Anne Hathaway’s Cottage, is preserved as a museum. Shakespeare spent much of his professional life in London, while Hathaway appears to have remained mainly in Stratford, though the surviving evidence is sparse.
A common mix-up is confusing Anne Hathaway with Shakespeare’s daughters, Susanna Hall and Judith Quiney. Another source of uncertainty is that her father’s will calls her “Agnes,” leading some scholars to suggest Agnes Hathaway as an alternative name. However, Anne Hathaway is the standard and widely accepted answer. She outlived Shakespeare by seven years and died in 1623.
