Santa Claus’s traditional Russian companion, the Snow Maiden, is called Snegurochka.
Snegurochka is a figure from Russian folklore whose name is commonly translated as “Snow Maiden.” In modern New Year celebrations, she is usually presented as the granddaughter and helper of Ded Moroz, the Russian winter gift-bringer.
Her story has older literary and folkloric forms. Alexander Ostrovsky wrote a famous play titled *The Snow Maiden* in 1873, and the character later appeared in operas, films, and holiday performances.
Snegurochka is not simply another name for Ded Moroz. She is a separate character who often accompanies him at public celebrations and helps distribute gifts. Russian holiday imagery therefore commonly shows the pair together, especially at New Year trees and children’s events.
