What is the name of Rio Carnival’s top competitive samba-school division?

Rio Carnival’s top competitive samba-school division is called Grupo Especial.

The schools in Grupo Especial present the most prominent competitive parades at the Sambadrome. Each school is evaluated in several categories, including samba-enredo, bateria, harmony, evolution, costumes, floats, and overall presentation.

The division is administered through Rio’s samba-school carnival organizations, whose structures and names have changed over time. Schools outside the top division compete in access or lower groups, and successful schools may be promoted while weaker performers can be relegated.

Grupo Especial should not be confused with the street-bloco program or with the entire Carnival celebration. It specifically identifies the elite competition among samba schools. The champion is determined from judges’ scores after the parade, with rules governing ties, penalties, and promotion between divisions.
