Emerson bought the house in July 1835 and named it “Bush.” He moved there with his new wife, Lydia Jackson Emerson, whom he called Lidian, and his mother. The property became the philosopher and writer's permanent home and a gathering place for leading figures of the American Transcendentalist movement.

Henry David Thoreau lived with the Emerson family for periods and helped maintain the property before building his famous cabin at Walden Pond. Other visitors and neighbors included Bronson Alcott, Louisa May Alcott, and Margaret Fuller. Emerson wrote and published important works while living at Bush, including essays associated with his ideas about self-reliance, nature, and intellectual independence.

The house was built in 1828, before Emerson purchased it, and it suffered a major fire in 1872. Friends raised money for repairs, allowing the Emerson family to return the following year. Today it operates as a seasonal house museum, with much of the interior preserved and Emerson memorabilia on display.
