Prada’s iconic tote bag named after the original store location is the Galleria bag.
The name refers to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan, where Mario Prada opened the brand’s first historic shop in 1913. The elegant arcade remains a central part of Prada’s origin story and gives the handbag its distinctive name.
The Galleria was conceived in 2007 and became one of Prada’s signature designs. Its structured silhouette, top handles, zip closures and organized interior give it a polished everyday-tote profile. Early versions prominently used Saffiano leather, a crosshatched material associated with Prada and patented by Mario Prada.
“Saffiano bag” is a frequent mix-up because many Galleria models are made from Saffiano leather. Saffiano describes the material or finish, whereas Galleria is the model name. The Brique and Nylon backpack are separate Prada designs, not names derived from the original Milan boutique.
