What is the name of Pokémon’s yellow mascot character?

The story behind the answer

Pokémon’s yellow mascot character is Pikachu.

Pikachu is an Electric-type Pokémon introduced in the first generation of the games. In the Pokédex, it is listed as number 025. Its name combines Japanese words associated with electric sparks and squeaking sounds, reflecting both its typing and its high-pitched cry.

Pikachu became especially famous as Ash Ketchum’s partner in the animated series. Although players could choose Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle as a starter in Pokémon Red and Green, Ash receives Pikachu in the anime and travels with it throughout much of the series.

Pikachu evolves from Pichu when friendship is high and can evolve into Raichu with a Thunder Stone. Those relationships are often confused with Pikachu’s own status: Pikachu is not the final form of the line, and it is not one of the three original starter choices.
