Galdhøpiggen is Norway’s highest mountain, rising to 2,469 metres above sea level.
The mountain stands in the Jotunheimen range in Lom Municipality, Innlandet county. Its name is commonly interpreted as meaning “the peak of Galdhø,” referring to the nearby mountain area. Galdhøpiggen is also the highest point in Northern Europe when the Caucasus is excluded from that geographical comparison.
The first recorded ascent took place in 1850. Three men from Lom—Steinar Sulheim, S. A. Arnesen, and Ludwig Wilhelm M. von Buch—reached the summit. Today, common routes begin near the Juvasshytta or Spiterstulen mountain lodges.
Glittertind was once sometimes reported as higher because its snow and ice cap increased its apparent elevation. Measurements of the permanent rock summit establish Galdhøpiggen as Norway’s highest mountain. The summit is accessible to hikers but remains an alpine environment.
