What is the name of Miguel's dog?

The story behind the answer

Miguel's dog is named Dante.

Dante is a stray Xoloitzcuintli, or Mexican hairless dog, who follows Miguel Rivera through Santa Cecilia and into the Land of the Dead. His breed connects him to Mexican history: the Xoloitzcuintli was associated with the god Xolotl and was traditionally believed to guide souls.

In the story, Dante initially seems like a lovable but clumsy pet. Once Miguel crosses into the afterlife, however, Dante becomes an alebrije—a brightly colored spirit creature—and helps him navigate the supernatural world. The film uses Dante to connect everyday Mexican life with its fantasy depiction of Día de los Muertos.

A common mix-up is confusing Dante with Pepita. Pepita is an enormous jaguar-like alebrije associated with Mamá Imelda, not Miguel's dog. Bruto and Chicharrón are also unrelated names from the film's wider cast of animals and spirits.
