What is the name of Meta's virtual reality social platform launched in 2021?

The story behind the answer

Meta’s virtual-reality social platform launched in 2021 was Horizon Worlds.

The platform began as Facebook Horizon, announced in 2019 as a social virtual world for Oculus devices. Facebook renamed it Horizon Worlds in October 2021, shortly before the company adopted the Meta name. After an invite-only testing period, Horizon Worlds opened to users in the United States and Canada on December 9, 2021.

Horizon Worlds was designed around user-created spaces and shared activities rather than a single linear game. People could explore environments, meet other avatars, and build interactive worlds. It was initially focused on virtual-reality headsets, although Meta later expanded access through web and mobile versions.

Horizon Workrooms is a separate collaboration product for virtual meetings, while Horizon Venues focused on attending live events. Those similarly named services are the main source of confusion. Horizon Home was a personal social space associated with the Quest platform, not the name of the broader social-world platform.
